Chapter 23 The Bloody Shirt Elects Grant The Republicans nominated General Grant for the presidency in 1868. The Republican Party supported the continuation of the Reconstruction of the South, while Grant stood on the platform of just having peace. The Democrats nominated Horatio Seymour. Grant won the election of 1868. The Era of Good Stealings Jim Fisk and Jay Gould devised a plot to drastically raise the price of the gold market in 1869. On Black Friday, September 24, 1869, the two bought a large amount of gold, planning to sell it for a profit. In order to lower the high price of gold, the Treasury was forced to sell gold from its reserves. Democrats were found in the South and in the northern industrial cities. A Stalwart faction led by Roscoe Conkling supported the system of swapping civil-servant jobs for votes. (Giving someone a job if they vote for a specific party/cause. Spoils system) Opposed to the Stalwarts were the Half-Breeds, led by James G. Blaine. The main disagreement between the two groups was over who would give the jobs to the people who voted in their favor. The Hayes-Tilden Standoff, 1876 Congress passed a resolution that reminded the country, and Grant, of the two-term tradition for presidency after Grant was speculating about running for a 3rd term. The Republicans chose Rutherford B. Hayes as their presidential candidate for the election of 1876. The Democrats chose Samuel J. Tilden. In the election, Tilden won the popular vote, but was 1 vote shy from winning in the Electoral College. The determining electoral votes would come from three states, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Florida who had each sent two sets of ballots to Congress, one with the Democrats victorious and the other with the Republicans victorious; there was no winner in these states. The gambling industry is a big money maker in America. Gambling institutions exist in many states. These institutions consist of riverboat casinos, Indian reservation casinos, and regular gaming casinos that all accumulate millions of dollars to the state through taxes. This tax money is then used throughout the state for many programs that may include education, health, and road maintenance. The American Gaming Association (AGA) even claims that gambling institutions lower the taxes in many areas because of the large tax money they give the government (CQ 784). Once a state signs the international human rights treaty it is said to have taken responsibility to ensure that the human rights of the people of that state are protected. A state is responsible to submit timely reports as desired by the treaty (Human Rights Council. 2015). Also if the state is questioned by the complaint mechanism of the international human rights, it cannot escape itself by claiming that the same was committed by any local authority, therefore making it very clear that once a state is a part of the treaty, it is responsible for the acts of the local bodies as well. Thus although the central government of any country has signed the treaty but it is the individual responsibility of the state as well to contribute to the same. It becomes easy for the central government to monitor the protection of the human rights of the ent ire country by making the states responsible for their acts and also made responsible to any kind of liability which arises due to compliance failure to the national as well as the international authorities ((Shelton, 2002). Apart from the state, the NGOs also have a responsibility towards upholding of the human rights. There are many non-governmental associations and organizations who have taken upon themselves to protect the rights of the humans. They act as a checkpoint for the government as well and monitor their actions towards the protection of the human rights. If the same is not done then they pressurize them to comply with the same. Organizations such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Human rights Action Centres help to protect the human rights. Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who conduct various researches and conduct various actions so that injustice being done is halted. Human Rights Action Centre is an NGO situated in Washington DC (Dighe, 2012). Its main job is concentrated towards innovation and creation of newer strategies so as to deal with human rights abuses. Lastly the Human Rights Watch helped to protect the human rights of people across the globe They challenge the government in case the rights of humans are infringed in their territory. They make the human rights abuses public thus making the infringers accountable for their actions in public (Humanrights.com. 2010). Apart from NGOs who are also non-state organizations who uphold the human rights, many others such as national and international original and minority groups, MNCs, terrorist and individuals themselves also contribute to the same. When the question comes towards protection of human rights by an individual, the first question that comes to our mind is whether the same in done in private capacity or in public capacity. If an act of an individual done in private sphere impacts the public, then the same should be bought under check. Lastly the persons who act in individual capacity should be made responsible for their criminal acts. Unfortunately the earlier decades had always held the state responsible for the acts of the individuals so much that they could easily escape their deeds. When he was left by his child and wife who committed a suicide, he became filled with grief and sought redemption. It was an epic adventure story about the crusades of Christians during 12th century. Balian was a stranger to Jerusalem but he became one of the knights there. The king offered him to marry his sister (Sybila) in order for Balian to take his place after his death, because he wanted to have a good leader to manage the place of the Holy Land, but Balian rejected the offer because of his conscience and respect to the expected husband (Guy) of Sybila. As I watched the film, it made me realized how Christians in the late century fought for their religion. It seemed so sad to know that fighting for their religion most likely meant taking others lives. They kept on killing people just to invade one’s place. The king knew that if Balian was the leader, he would not let Jerusalem struggle. He would protect the Holy Land and the people who were living there. Guy as the king was just profiteering and made the religion and position as a front self-advancement. He and his members were just using their religion for their personal needs and power against the people under them. In fact, he betrayed the people living in Jerusalem and the people who were under Saladin. He was a kind of a leader who did not know how to manage his people. He had a small mind to decide things that were not necessary. I really hated Guy because he was the one who started the war. He didnt deserve the position they had given to him. He was an immoral person who didnt care for the sake of his people. He deserved what happened to him in the hand of Saladin a lot due to his unlawful actions. If Balian only accepted the position offered to him, I think all that misunderstandings between the Christians and Muslims would not happened. But we cannot blame Balian because he placed himself where he supposed to be. Yet, he did not forsake the land of Jerusalem; instead he stood for it in order to save the people. I was amazed for the brave personality of Balian he was more intelligent than Guy, because when the Muslims stroke their territory, even they did not have enough knights, and still he managed to protect their place. Because of his righteousness, many people adored him, and he became the hero of their land even though at first he was only a stranger. He put on all his efforts and sacrificed a lot, but when they no longer had defense against their opponents, Balian surrendered the land of Jerusalem to Saladin, rather than to let people suffer more. He thought that when the war would continue, lots of people (both old and children) would die. He was not selfish, because he always thought about the welfare of the majority.
